Trace Cowboy Hats For Kids

Cowboy hats have interesting curves that make them fun to draw.

Tracing is one of the most basic forms of drawing, and a great way to learn draw anything. Children use imitation as a main method of learning. Many people trying to learn a select skill (drawing, guitar, etc.) will find that imitation will teach them more than any other method of learning. It's best to find a simple object to trace at first; a cowboy hat would be a great choice to start with.

Instructions

1. Find a reference picture. You will use this picture as guidance to trace your cowboy hat, so choose whichever picture you think looks the best. A quick search on Google can find you what you want, though you will need a printer to print the picture. If you do not have a printer, flip through some magazines or other printed resources.

2. Print out the picture you have decided to use. If the picture you would like to use is from a magazine or another paper source, then use that. Lay it on a flat surface (preferably a table) to have a stable surface to draw on.

3. Place the tracing paper over top of the picture. Use the tape to fasten the tracing paper to the reference picture by its corners. Tracing objects can get annoying if your tracing paper keeps moving out of alignment, so it's best to take precautions to prevent it.

4. Follow the outline of the shape of the hat with your pencil. After you're done with the outline of the hat, trace all the additional lines you see first, such as the brim of the hat. This will add more shapes to your outline, making it look like an actual hat instead of a blob.

5. Add the details. Look for the shaded areas in the hat and darken those places with your pencil. To make it a little easier, outline the shaded areas you see in the hat and color them in. This will give your hat more of a cartoony look, however, so avoid doing this if you're going for a more realistic hat. When you're finished, take the tape off the corners of the tracing paper (you may need to cut it away).
