Make Luau Decorations For A Super Sweet Sixteen Party

Create a Hawaiian-themed sweet 16 party with tropical flair.

There are many special birthdays in a person's life, with the 16th being one of the most memorable. Celebrating a sweet 16 occasion can be done in a multitude of ways ranging from a simple picnic to a more elaborate Cinderella-themed event. One theme party that is particularly festive is a Hawaiian luau. In addition to out-of-the-ordinary food and activities, luau parties are enhanced with beautiful decorations. Creating do-it-yourself Hawaiian-themed decorations is an entertaining and inexpensive way to amplify the luau atmosphere and adds to the overall visual appeal of the party. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Create homemade leis. Purchase silk flowers in bright colors, and cut the blooms off. Using an embroidery needle, string the blooms one by one on a length of quilting thread. When the string is complete, cut the thread just below the needle, and tie the two ends together in a knot for a whimsical do-it-yourself luau decoration that guests wear during the party.

2. Make a flip-flop and sunglasses tree. Take a large branch that is approximately six feet tall, and insert it in a colorful metal pail filled with sand. Choose a variety of brightly colored rubber flip-flops and plastic sunglasses and hang them all over the tree branches as a luau birthday decoration that brightens the entire space.

3. Decorate a tiki bar. Tape grass skirts on the front edge of a rectangular table until all the sides are completely covered. Line the top of the table with bamboo place mats. Embellish the front of the table with garlands of silk flowers and fake tropical fruits for a beverage-serving station with tropical appeal.

4. Assemble balloon bouquets. Choose balloons in colors that match the theme of the sweet 16 party and fill them with helium. Using a permanent marker, write the number "16" on each balloon, and tie the balloons in bunches with lengths of curled ribbon. Arrange the balloon bouquets in the corners of the room for an added element of height and interest.

5. Create fruit centerpieces. Cut up a variety of tropical fruits, such as pineapples, mangoes, kiwis and bananas, and display the pieces on a three-tiered display plate. Insert edible flowers in open areas on the plates for a table display that tastes as good as it looks.

6. Make coconut candleholders. Cut a coconut in half, and scoop out the flesh. Fill the halves with sand. Place a tropical-scented candle in a clear votive holder, and press the candleholder into the sand. Place the coconut candleholders on the party tables for the crowning touch to your Hawaiian-themed sweet 16 event.
