Make Safety Bingo For Work

Safety bingo motivates employees to stay safe.

Safety bingo is a motivational game that increases safety awareness in the workplace. The concept is similar to traditional bingo. Each employee receives a bingo card at the beginning of the game and one number is drawn each day until someone makes a bingo and earns a prize. Numbers are generally posted in an employee break room so everyone can check their bingo cards daily. When an employee suffers a preventable work injury, the game ends and everyone gets new cards. Although bingo is fun to play on its own, the incentive to win a prize also becomes a subconscious reminder for employees to follow safety protocol.

Instructions

1. Use a word processing program to create a flier announcing the start of a safety bingo program. Hang these fliers in employee areas to draw interest.

2. Decide what prize safety bingo winners should receive. If you choose to award cash, check with your human resources department for payroll regulations on cash prizes. Prizes may also require budget approval.

3. Distribute rules sheets and bingo cards to department managers. Hold a managers' meeting to discuss implementing the program. On the designated start date, managers should give one card to each employee and explain how safety bingo works.

4. Hang a dry-erase board in the employee break room. Write "Safety Bingo" at the top of the board. Draw a line down the middle of the board to create two sections. On one side, write "Today's Number." On the other side, write "Days Without a Lost Time Accident." Post safety bingo rules and a safety manual next to the board.

5. Update the board every day with the newly called bingo number and the days without an accident. Keep a spreadsheet of numbers called and post this next to the board so employees can check for numbers they missed on their days off.

6. Continue calling numbers each day until either someone wins or is injured due to not following safety policy.

7. Write the winner's name and department on the board to announce an end to the first round of safety bingo. Continue with a new game and new prize.

8. Wipe the board clean and remove the list of previously called numbers following an eligible injury. Collect bingo cards from all employees and start the game over.
