Make Flavored Hawaiian Sea Salts

Hawaiian sea salt has a distinctive red color.

Hawaiian sea salt salt comes in two varieties: Alaea and Hiwa Kai. Alaea is named after "Alae", the red volcanic clay that is added to enrich the salt's flavor. It has an earthy, mellow taste and distinctive red color. Hiwa Kai has a dramatic black color because of the added activated charcoal. Hawaiian sea salt can be flavored with herbs and spices to create a delicious and colorful finishing salt. Alaea is best suited to flavoring since its mellower and its lighter color pairs better with flavors. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

Citrus Salt

1. Set the orange rind on a clean surface and allow to dry for three to five hours.

2. Mix 2 tbsp. of orange rind with 1/2 cup sea salt. Pour the salt mixture into the pitcher of your blender.

3. Blend the salt and rinds together at low speed, using the quick pulse setting. Do not blend into a fine powder. Just pulse the mixture until the rind is incorporated.

4. Pour the salt mixture into storage containers. This flavored salt is perfect for fish.

Rosemary Sea Salt

5. Strip the rosemary leaves from the stems and discard the stems.

6. Mix the rosemary stems with 1/2 cup sea salt and pour into the pitcher of your blender.

7. Blend the salt and rosemary together on low speed, pulsing to mix not pulverize.

8. Remove the salt mixture and pour into storage containers. This flavored salt is great on tomato salads and pastas.

Garlic Sea Salt

9. Crush the garlic with the blade of your knife then mince until fine.

10. Mix the garlic with 1/2 cup of sea salt and pour into the pitcher of your blender.

11. Blend the salt together until just mixed. Do not overblend. You want the salt crystals to stay coarse.

12. Pour the garlic salt out of the blender and into a storage container. This flavored salt pairs well with steak and chicken.
