Hawaiian-style flower pots may have large, ornamental flower blossoms on the sides and a row of smiling teeth around the perimeter. You may also see the shape of two closed eyelids on either side of the pot, reflecting a tiki style. You can make your own Hawaiian flower pots with designs made from modeling clay that overlay a terra cotta pot and acrylic craft paint. Look for your supplies at local craft stores; you may also find flower patterns from coloring books and online clip art.
Instructions
1. Paint the outside of your terra cotta flower pot a deep green or bright yellow. Both colors offer a beautiful background for either a bright yellow or a fuchsia hibiscus flower blossom. These colors are suggestions; coordinate any color combinations you like for your flower pot. Remember to think tropical as you make your selections. Let the paint dry.
2. Paint a 2-inch white strip around the perimeter of the flower pot, 2-inches from the bottom. After the paint dries, outline the white strip with a black or deep green marker, whichever suits the color of the flower pot best. Draw a black or dark green horizontal line in the center of the white strip, all around the perimeter. Create tiki teeth by drawing vertical lines from the top to the bottom of the white strip, every inch or so around the pot.
3. Soften the modeling clay with your hands and form the shape of the blossom of a hibiscus flower. Flatten the clay to between 1 and 1.5 inches thick by rolling it with a clay roller. Place the flower pattern on top of the clay and cut out around it with a clay or craft knife.
4. Roll out another sheet of clay and place an oval pattern on top. You will need to cut out two oval shapes. These will be the leaves for your flower and also the tiki-style eyes.
5. Roll out more modeling clay and cut one elongated oval shape. This is the stem of your flower.
6. Lay the flower pot on one side and place the clay flower onto the pot, close to the top edge. Mold it so that the flower follows the shape of the pot. Place the stem beneath the blossom and place the two ovals on either side of the stem. Let the clay air dry, according to the manufacturer's directions.
7. Remove the clay pieces and paint them with acrylics. If you painted the pot dark green, paint the leaves and the stem light green so they will show up against the pot. Let the paint dry. Draw a thin horizontal line with a black marker through the center of each leaf so that they are similar to sleeping eyes. You can also accent the edges of your flower blossom with a black marker if you like. Short black lines extending from the center of the blossom will also add to the design.
8. Glue the flower, leaves and stem onto the pot with waterproof craft glue. Repeat Step 3 through Step 7 to make a Hawaiian design on the opposite side of the flower pot.
