Make Miniature Grass Skirts

Grass skirts can be made for a doll.

Grass skirts are often worn by Hawaiian hula dancers for performances at luaus or tourist attractions. Authentic Hawaiian grass hula skirts are made from natural fibers, such as ti leaves or dried grasses. You can make miniature versions of this recognized Hawaiian costume as party favors, decorations or clothes for a doll.

Instructions

1. Cut a 2-inch long piece of elastic ribbon to become the skirt's waistband. Cut the raffia into 2-inch long pieces. You will need 20-25 pieces of raffia for one miniature skirt.

2. Lay the cut ribbon face down on your work surface. Place a thin line of glue on the back of each piece of ribbon. Attach the raffia pieces to the ribbon by pressing one end into the glue on the ribbon. Be sure each piece touches the previous one so there are no gaps in the ribbon waistband of your skirt. Glue raffia along the entire length of the 2-inch ribbon. Allow the glue to dry completely for 30-60 minutes.

3. Attach the ends of the ribbon together to make the waistband of the miniature skirt. With the decorative side facing out and the glued side on the inside, place one end over the other to overlap slightly. Hand stitch or staple the two ends together to keep them in place.

4. Use your fingers to fluff out the green raffia strips so they hang down loosely from the ribbon waistband.
