Throw A 1980s Cookout

Serve up some grilled grub at an '80s-themed cookout.

On a warm summer evening, nothing celebrates the season better than an outdoor party with freshly grilled food, cool beverages and the company of good friends. While any cookout is sure to be a blast, make the day even more fun by giving your get-together a 1980s theme. With theme-friendly decorations, music and activities, along with good food, the guests as well as the hosts are sure to have an evening they'll never forget. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Invite the guests to dress in their '80s best. When inviting guests to the cookout, ask them to wear theme-appropriate clothing, such as Ray-Bans, aerobics wear, bright prints and big hair. Better yet, encourage guests to dress up as celebrities from the 1980s, such as Madonna and Boy George.

2. Deck out tables with tablecloths that boast 1980s patterns and colors, such as bright teal and red on a black background. Decorate with cardboard cutouts and posters featuring '80s icons such as Darth Vader, Michael Jackson, Ronald Reagan and Ferris Bueller.

3. Play popular songs from the 1980s. On a boombox, blare hits by Milli Vanilli, Bruce Springsteen, A-Ha and Cindy Lauper.

4. Grill up some food. Serve up rib sandwiches inspired by a 1980s cult favorite, the McDonald's McRib sandwich. Even regular dishes can be transformed into '80s fare when served on plates that look like old vinyl records or that feature '80s patterns. Along with traditional cookout grub, ask guests to bring their favorite foods for the '80s.

5. Play some games that celebrate the 1980s. "Trivial Pursuit: Totally 80s," VH1's "I Love the 80s Board Game" or "Scene It? 80s Edition" will force guests to reflect on the beloved decade while they show off their knowledge of the era.
