There are many options when it comes to traveling the Hawaiian Islands.
The state of Hawaii consists of six islands that are referred to as the Hawaiian Islands. They are Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the big island of Hawaii. With temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees, the islands are an ideal vacation destination year round. When planning your vacation you'll want to see as much of each island's Hawaiian culture as possible. To do so you'll need to know the best options when it comes to inter-island travel and ground transportation.
Instructions
1. Choose which island to begin your travels. Your decision will effect the ease in which you can travel from one island to another. Maui, Kauai and the big island of Hawaii receive some direct mainland flights; however, Honolulu International Airport on Oahu that is the main airport for Hawaii.
2. Get tickets to the islands that you plan to visit using one of the inter-island airlines. These airlines are Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, go!Mokulele and Pacific Wings. If you are flying from Honolulu, take the Wiki-Wiki Shuttle at the airport to the inter-island terminal for your flights.
3. Travel by ferry if you are going from Maui to Lanai or Molokai. These services are available to tourists on a daily basis.
4. Reserve a car. If you want freedom to explore the islands, check with your travel agent to determine the best type of vehicle to rent for each. Molokai, for example, often requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle for certain excursions. Obtain a map of the islands so that you will clearly know where you should and should not travel.
5. Schedule a tour by bus or shuttle. If you prefer more structure, a guided tour will allow you to travel the islands without fear of getting lost. They also will provide the opportunity to learn about the history of the islands.
6. Walk, rent a bike or take the bus or a taxi. If you plan to stay within a certain area, renting a vehicle may be an unnecessary expense. On Oahu, for example, if you plan are to stay near Waikiki Beach, the hotels and tourist attractions in that area, walking or taking the city buses may be the only mode of travel required.
