Tune A Guitar To Hawaiian Slack Key

"Slack key" tuning is traditionally associated with Hawaiian music and is composed of numerous different tunings. The most popular and common is known as "Taro Patch" or Open G tuning. A little Internet research can reveal many other tunings and information on traditional Hawaiian songs. Here is tune for slack key.

Instructions

1. Start with your guitar tuned to standard tuning: E A D G B E (low to high)

2. Lower the pitch of the low E string one step to D. This string should now match the tone of the adjacent A string, fretted on the 5th fret.

3. Lower the pitch of the low A string one step to G. This string should now match the tone of the adjacent D string, fretted on the 7th fret.

4. The D, G and B strings remain the same as in standard tuning.

5. Lower the pitch of the high E string one step to D.

6. You may need to re-tune your strings a couple of times until they settle into the new tuning. Using an electronic tuner or piano can help you achieve an accurate tuning.
