Hula Hoop Games

Plan exciting games using hula hoops.

Hula hoops are a challenging toy that many adults and children find entertaining. Learning hula hoop is a difficult task and takes a lot of practice; however, you can also use the toys to play a variety of games at a birthday party or social event. Adjust the difficulty of each game depending on the ages of the players to create a hula hoopin' good time for your guests.

Contests

Basic contests are perfect when playing games with hula hoops. See which player can hula hoop the longest amount of time, who can do the most tricks and who can hula hoop with the most hoops. Have players compete one-on-one or one versus all. Other contest ideas include seeing which player can hula hoop around his arm, leg or neck the longest.

Tossing Games

Hang hula hoops at different levels from a tree or clothesline. Player can try to toss footballs, basketballs and other sports balls through the hoops. You can write a point value on each hoop and the player who scores the most points wins the game. For a variation, give each player 10 balls to toss. The player who makes the most balls through the hoops wins the game. Alternatively, scatter large orange cones on the ground. Players can use the hoops to try to toss onto the cones. The player who rings the most cones wins the game.

Group Games

Everyone can stand in a circle for this hula hoop game. Have everyone join hands. Walk up in between two players and take apart their hands. Place the hoop on one of the player's arm and have them reconnect hands. The players must work the hoop all the way around the circle without letting go of each other's hand. Play this game in one large group and time the players so they can try to beat their fastest time each round. You can also play by dividing the players into teams and the team who gets the hoop around the circle first wins the game.

Hoop Races

Players can use a hula hoop just like a jump rope. Mark a started line and a finish line. Players must place both hands on the top of the hoop and flip it around their body as if they would a jump rope. The players can race to the finish line. For a variation, divide the players into two teams and compete in a relay race. The first team to finish wins the race. Alternatively, players can also roll the hoop on its side to the finish line and back.
