Pirates steal from the rich, bury their treasure on deserted islands and lead rough and tumble lives. It's no wonder that kids are drawn to the idea of pirates and want pirate-themed birthday parties. After you have the decorations purchased and the invitations sent out, it's time to give thought to the cake. Kids' pirate cakes give you the perfect finish to the party and are easy enough for even novice bakers to make. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Treasure Chest
For a treasure chest-style pirate cake, you need at least three square or rectangular cakes and chocolate or dark brown icing. Place one cake on a cake plate or flat surface and apply a thin layer of frosting to the top. Stack a second cake on top of the first and add more frosting to the top. Decorate the top of the cake with gold coins, candy necklaces and other edible embellishments. Carefully place the third cake on top, positioning it toward the back so that it looks like the top of the treasure chest and you can still see the decorations. Cover the entire cake in frosting and use a spatula to swipe across the top and create the look of wood planks.
Treasure Map
Turn a traditional round or square cake into a treasure map cake. Coat the cake in a layer of white frosting, mixed with blue food coloring to mimic the look of water. Pipe light brown icing into the shape of land on the top. Use red icing to create slashes across the cake and a large "X," indicating the hiding spot of the treasure.
Pirate Ahoy
Add a few drops of red food coloring to white icing, making it a light peach color, similar to flesh tone. Frost a round cake with the icing. Use chocolate frosting to create two eyes, the mouth and the outline of the nose for the pirate's face. Pipe an eye patch around one eye and use more frosting to create a bandana at the top of the pirate's head.
Treasure Ship
Make two square cakes, using a larger pan and a smaller pan. After the cakes cool, stack the big cake on top of the small. Add a layer of icing in the middle. Cover the cake in chocolate frosting and decorate to look like a real pirate ship. Create ship masts from white paper threaded through pretzel sticks. Use chocolate malt balls as cannonballs. Place pirate action figures and toys on the top of the cake as the finishing touch.
