Blue and gold icing can transform a normal cake into a special dessert.
Cakes are used for a wide variety of festive events. They can mark weddings, birthdays, holidays and other social gatherings. Cakes can follow a specific color scheme to match the theme of an event. Colored Layers
Use blue and yellow food coloring to create blue and yellow layers of cake. Divide your prepared cake batter into two or more dishes. Stir in the food coloring. The more drops of coloring you add, the brighter your colors will turn out. You can also use yellow cake rather than dye to achieve the gold color. Pour the colored batter in layers into your cake pan. You can also use separate pans if you want to add icing between the layers.
Colored Icing
Use icing to create a stark contrasting effect. Use food coloring to bake a cake that is either blue or gold. Then prepare the icing so that it, too, is either blue or gold, but the reverse of the cake. Cover the cake completely with the icing. The sliced cake will have a striking gold outside and blue inside, or vice versa. You can also use bold-colored fondant to cover the un-iced cake to achieve the same effect.
Decorations
Use blue and gold decorations to transform the look of any cake. Add colored balls or sprinkles for a simple but effective decoration. Use piped icing to add swirls, flowers, ribbons and other edible ornaments. You can also use icing to write a message on the top of the cake if it is being prepared for a special event. Write the letters in blue, gold or both colors.
Toppers
Find cake toppers that fit with your blue and gold color scheme. Many grocery stores and craft stores sell cake toppers. If your cake is for a wedding, find a bride and groom topper that features the figures wearing those colors. Use blue and gold candles for a birthday cake. Look for other motifs that suit your event. You can also use small plastic toys if you cannot find any other festive toppers.
