This Labor Day, don't just grill at your party; instead, pick a theme for your party and prepare the mood to match your theme.
The Labor Day holiday is considered by many to be the end of summer. During the three-day weekend that comes with this holiday, celebrate the last gasp of summer with your friends and neighbors. Enjoy a neighborhood block party, celebrate with a luau party, enjoy some stargazing time, or spend a night at the movies with your friends as you bid summer farewell at your Labor Day party.
Neighborhood Block Party
Coordinate with your neighbors and throw an old-fashioned block party for Labor Day. Each house can provide a certain dish or drinks. You can make a map for attendees, and they can go house-by-house to pick up their dinners. The first house everyone visits will offer appetizers, the second will offer main courses, and the third can provide desserts. Drinks can be offered at each house. Ask one of the neighbors to volunteer for DJ duty. Set up relay games and sack races for the kids to enjoy.
Labor Day Luau
Torch lights can set the mood for your Labor Day luau.
Enjoy the last moments of summer with a luau. Purchase leis for your guests and have Hawaiian music playing out on the deck. Prepare traditional Hawaiian foods like Shoyu Chicken or Huli Huli Chicken. You can also incorporate a variety of fresh fruits into your menu. Pineapples and watermelons are considered traditional luau fruits. Use torch lights as the sun sets to add to your luau theme, and, for fun, invite guests to participate in hula dancing or a game of limbo.
A Potluck Party For The Stars
Invite your guests to attend a star-gazing Labor Day party. Since it is a potluck event, ask each guest to bring an appetizer, dessert or drink. You can prepare the main dishes, and for an outdoor event, you may wish to grill hot dogs or hamburgers. Set up plenty of lawn chairs and blankets. Be sure you prepare your telescope and have extra binoculars around for your guests. Soft music can play in the background as you enjoy star-gazing with friends.
Labor Day Movies
Contact your local rental supply company and rent a large movie projector. Once you've secured the projector, invite your friends to an outside movie screening party. Set up blankets and chairs for your guests. You can project the movie onto the side of your house (if you have a brick house, you may need to hang up a sheet for best picture quality). For food, prepare movie-time snacks like popcorn and nachos. Soft drinks and beer can be used to quench the thirst of your guests.
