Island Cake Ideas

Themed birthdays are popular with young children, and it's important when organizing the party to ensure that the cake is also decorated according to the theme. Cakes decorated like islands can be used for pirate, tropical, surfing or ocean themed parties. These cakes can be decorated with the use of frosting, different shaped pans and the use of jello. Add this to my Recipe Box.

The Classic Island Cake

The easiest island cake to make is to bake a simple round cake and decorate it like an island with frosting and additional treats. Bake a cake in 12-inch round pan or purchase a plain sponge cake from the grocery store. Use yellow icing to represent sand and cover the top of the cake. Use blue icing around the edges for water. Apply it in a wavy manner to evoke the image of waves. Add some island-themed toys on top, like palm trees and plastic animals.

Tropical Island Jello Cake

This cake is great for summer as it consists largely of jello. Prepare two packets of blue jello, pour them into a serving dish and allow it to set. Use a vanilla cake mix and bake it in a pudding bowl. After the jello has set, carve out space for the cake and place it in the hole. Crush the blue jello that was scooped out and set it around the cake. Cover the cake in vanilla icing and sprinkle yellow jello crystals on top. Decorate the cake as desired.

Island Cupcakes

Another idea is to create several different island cupcakes and serve them on a tray with blue cellophane in between. Cupcakes are easy and fast to distribute and reduce the chance of squabbles between children about the size of the piece they're given. Decorate the cupcakes with yellow icing and add a miniature cocktail umbrella to each. Lie plastic animals, like a shark and an octopus, between the cupcakes on the blue cellophane to add to the decorations.

A Pirate Island Cake

This cake is ideal for a pirate-themed birthday. Bake a 13-inch by 9-inch cake and placed an 8-inch round cake on top of it. Use blue frosting for the square cake and yellow for the round cake. Add squiggles of blue frosting to create ripples in the ocean and place a toy row-boat with a pirate in it to one side. Add a plastic crocodile, palm tree, two pirates and a treasure chest on the island to complete the cake.
