Bring the feel of the tropics to your luau party with a few inexpensive ideas.
Celebrating with a luau party doesn't have to be expensive even if you have a lot of guests. Everything from food to decorations for an island-themed party can be done inexpensively if you have a little time and use a little imagination. Setting the mood for a successful luau party is simple with the help of your guests and with things you can make and do yourself. Does this Spark an idea?
Invitations
You don't have to spend a lot of money on invitations if you make your own. Depending on how you want to send your invitation, you probably already have most of the things that you need. Use your printer to print your own invitations or make them by hand. Include Hawaiian themed images such as pineapples, volcanoes or hula dancers. Other inexpensive ways of inviting people to your luau party are to send an email, a free e-vite (an electronic invite) or a text message.
Decorations
Decorating with tropical flowers can be expensive, so you can make your own tropical flowers from tissue paper instead. Styrofoam and paint can be used to make a surfboard and strips of plywood and paint can be used to make beach signs. If you don't want to make your own decorations, you can find inexpensive things to decorate with from discount or craft stores, including seashells, plastic leis and strips of rafia, which can be used as a table skirt. Other inexpensive things that you can decorate with are placemats and table cloths with a Hawaiian theme and tropical fruits such as pineapples and coconuts. Additionally, ask your friends if you can borrow things that they might have that you can use as decoration.
Food and Drinks
You don't have to worry about spending too much for food and drinks for your luau party if you assign each of your guests to bring something. For your luau pot luck, guests can bring a pork dish, fresh cut fruits, rice, skewers of ham and pineapples, macadamia nuts or fruit punch. If it's a luau party for adults, guests can bring beer and other alcoholic beverages to make mai tais, pina coladas and daiquiris.
Entertainment
A luau party wouldn't be complete without a limbo contest, which doesn't cost a lot of money because all you'll need is a wooden pole, preferably a bamboo one. If you ask your guests to wear a Hawaiian shirt to your party, you can have a contest for who wears the brightest and most festive Hawaiian shirt. A hula hoop is an inexpensive toy that you can use to play a game to see who can hula the longest. Don't forget to play music to create a festive atmosphere. Some of the music that you can play are "Blue Hawaii" by Elvis Presley, "I Miss You My Hawaii" by Na Leo Pilimehana and "Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Collection, Vol. 2" by various artists.
