Lake Huron Public Beaches

Lake Huron's freshwater beaches are clean and sandy.

Unbeknownst to many, Lake Huron abounds with beaches. In fact, sand and rock beaches run along most of the coastline, some of which are desolate. Because east Michigan is not a tourist hot spot, it's a place to get away to if you're looking to avoid the crowds. Don't forget the Canadian side too, which contains the longest freshwater beaches in the world.

Port Austin, Michigan

Port Austin's ninety miles of shoreline offer three sandy beaches to choose from. Bird Creek County Park beach is right downtown the small village of Port Austin. You can find McGraw County Park seven miles west of Port Austin, and Oak Beach County Park two miles further. All beaches offer flush toilets, playgrounds, picnic areas and running water, and some even have bath houses and accommodations for fishing and boat launching.

Lakeside Beach, Michigan

Lakeside Beach, located in Port Huron at the southernmost tip of Lake Huron, offers sandy beaches and shallow water for swimmers, joggers, picnickers, fishers and more. Parking costs $5 during the summer and no lifeguards are on duty. Port Huron, a small maritime city, manages several parks, museums and a marina, and is home to the expansive Blue Water Bridge.

Wasaga Beach, Ontario

You can't say you've been to a Lake Huron beach until you've been to Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada, the longest freshwater beach in the world. Wasaga Beach boasts 8.6 miles of pristine sand and shallow bath-like water along Georgian Bay. Wasaga Beach is a hot spot for tourists in the summer, but because the beach is so large, secluded spots are easy to find. Right along the beach you'll find restaurants, vendor stands, shopping and more. The town of Wasaga Beach is geared toward tourists with motels, campgrounds, cottages and bed and breakfasts to stay at. Enjoy golf, go-karting, cycling, hiking and more. You'll find Wasaga Beach 296 miles from Detroit, Michigan.

Sauble Beach, Ontario

Sauble Beach, located on the Canadian side of Lake Huron, rivals Wasaga with its 6.8 miles of sandy waterfront. The main street in the tourist town of Sauble Beach leads straight to the water -- just look for the big "Sauble Beach" sign. Sauble Beach's very shallow waters and sandbars offer safe swimming for kids and babies. Like Wasaga beach, food vendors, restaurants, motels and shops are all within short walking distance of Sauble Beach. No lifeguards are on duty. Parking fees range from $3 to $20 CAD.
