Ideas For A Tropical Theme

Turn your next party into a tropical paradise.

Creating a tropical theme for any occasion is easy; party guests will enjoy the tropical amenities available at your next party. Drinks, food, decorations and a tropical ambiance will make your friends and family members feel like they've been transported to an island in the Caribbean for the evening despite the fact they're in your backyard. It's often the small, thoughtful ideas that create the biggest effect when party planning, so don't skimp on the details. Does this Spark an idea?

Tropical Drinks

If your party includes beverages, and what party doesn't, you'll want to create a tropical themed bar. Of course you'll want water and juice for any little ones and nondrinkers, but you can dress them up with by putting them in hurricane glasses and topping them with umbrellas. Stick with a tropical theme at the bar by offering only tropical drinks such as Mojitos, Mai Tais and lava flows. Garnish drink ware with pineapple slices or other pieces of fruit to keep your drinks tropical and fresh.

Tropical Centerpieces

Decorate your tables with tropical centerpieces. Fill glass bowls, vases and containers -- the less they match the better -- with white sand and seashells. Sand dollars, star fish and other white shells create a tropical, elegant look for any table. Place white votive candles sporadically around your tables and flat surfaces, and place just a few large, colorful flowers in strategic locations on your buffet table and bar.

Tropical Menus

In keeping with your tropical party theme, the menu should feature tropical selections for guests, to keep them feeling in the tropical spirit. Start the party with appetizers such as diced chicken and pineapple salsa or sweet and sour meatballs. Chicken and shrimp kabobs with slices of pineapple and other veggies and crab cakes will help your guests feel they are dining on a beach somewhere in the tropics. For dessert, serve pineapple upside down cake and coconut cookies.

Tropical Extras

If you have a pool, place floating candles in various colors in the water and light them. Light tiki torches and jar candles in tropical scents. Pass out leis as your guests arrive to create a festive look. Play the limbo or have a hula contest. If you plan on passing out favors, put tropical scented candles in small beach pails filled with sand and add a personalized name tag to each pail.
