Ideas For A Hawaiian Luau Party

Use several beach-themed items to decorate for your Hawaiian luau party.

A Hawaiian luau is a perfect party theme for a summer birthday or social gathering. From the invitations to the games, use your creativity and imagination to bring the tropical paradise to your party. Hand out prizes and party favors, such as Hawaiian leis, shells, inflatable beach toys and coconuts, to your guests to take home as mementos of your Hawaiian luau party.

Invitations

Create invitations using inexpensive flip-flops from your local retail or craft store. Write the party details on the flip-flop and hand-deliver them to your party guests. You can also print your invitations on small slips of paper and roll them up. Tie a piece of ribbon around each invitation and stick them into plastic bottles filled with sand, seashells and small plastic fish for decoration. Mail the sand bottle invitations in boxes or hand deliver them to each one of your party guests.

Decorations

As your party guests arrive, place leis around their necks. Decorate the party area with large inflatable palm trees, grass table runners, tiki lights, tropical fruit centerpieces and Hawaiian-themed tableware. Use large beach towels as tablecloths and place several inflatable beach balls around the party area. Other items you can place around the party area include suntan lotion, sunglasses, snorkels, starfish and large seashells. Play Hawaiian music throughout the party.

Activities

If budget allows, hire a hula instructor to teach your guests hula dance. Give each guest a grass skirt to wear while she is learning the dance. Another activity for your party guests is sand painting. Place several different bags of colored sand on a table. Colored sand is available at many craft stores. Give the guests construction paper and glue. Use the glue to draw a beach scene and cover the scene with different colors of sand. For example, she can draw a palm tree with glue. Then take green and brown sand to color the palm tree. Shake off any excess sand and allow each picture to dry.

Sand Bucket Toss

Make a sand bucket toss game using ping-pong balls, sand shovels and beach pails. Place several beach pails on the ground and mark a starting line about 10 feet away (adjust the distance depending on the ages of players). Mark point values on each one of the pails. Have the players line up at the starting line and give each player a sand shovel. He must use the shovel to try to toss ping-pong balls into the pails. Give each player 10 ping-pong balls. Keep record of each player's score and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
