Invitations
Sending luau-themed invitations can get guests into the summer mood, but adding gifts to the invitation can help them prepare for the party.
The types of gifts you can add to the invitations may depend on whether you are mailing or hand-delivering the invites. Either way, try to use blue or yellow envelopes to give the impression of ocean and sun.
For your little girl's guests, include a small gift with the invitation, such as a plastic or paper flower lei, a flowered hair comb or a flowery bracelet. These gifts will give the girls something to wear to the party. If your child has invited some boys as well, you can include leis or plastic sunglasses.
Adorn the invitations with a variety of beach-themed decorations. Apply a thin layer of sand to part of the invitation with craft glue, or hand out small Ziploc bags filled with sand, small rocks or shells with the invitations.
Costumes

Flowers, either real or made of paper, can also add to a young lady's costume. Hawaiian girls often wear flowers behind their ears. A flower behind the left ear means they are married, while one behind the right ear means they are single. This can help you get mothers involved as well, even though they may be too embarrassed to wear grass skirts.
Games
Luau games can keep the party lively and keep guests entertained.
If a lot of guests wear their own costumes or find unique ways to wear the pieces you give them, hold a costume contest. You can even mention in your invitation that there will be a contest for best luau-themed costume. You can have small toys as prizes, or prizes such as the first cup of punch or the first piece of pizza later in the party.
Because traditional luaus often feature hula dancers, hold a hula hoop contest to see who can spin the longest. Similarly, limbo contests can bring an air of tradition to your luau celebration.
