Pineapples are a common Hawaiian-grown fruit.
From pineapple to papaya and beyond, Hawaii is known for the sweet, juicy fruits it produces. You can find some Hawaiian-grown fruits in supermarkets across the U.S. You can also order fruits directly from Hawaii to your doorstep. Varieties include pineapple, papaya, lychee, longan, rambutan, starfruit, mango, lilikoi (also known as passion fruit) and guava. Hawaii's fruit must first be examined and treated before exported to the mainland because Hawaii is under a federal fruit fly quarantine. Look for "Seals of Quality" from the Hawaiian Department of Agriculture for fruit that has been deemed Hawaii's "cream of the crop" of local produce. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Research the fruits of Hawaii to learn about the options. Select favorites like pineapples and papayas as well as tropical delicacies like lilikoi, lychee and longan to try.
2. Research produce companies. Look into companies that export fresh fruits from Hawaii to the mainland. Make sure they are following state and federal laws about mailing produce. Also ask about their shipping procedures and costs so you know how long it takes your produce to get to you and what condition you can expect it to arrive in, as well as how long you'll have to eat it once it arrives. You can find companies that sell and ship Hawaiian fruit at the Hawaiian Agricultural Products directory website as well as the organic farm directory at Local Harvest.
3. Order the fruits of your choosing. Ask about shipping costs to calculate the total cost of importing your own fresh fruits from Hawaii.
