Ideas For A 13th Birthday Luau

Use pineapples and a coconut to bowl at the luau.

Your baby is officially a teenager and she wants to celebrate her 13th birthday with a luau. Retire the clown and face paint and play plenty of loud music. Invest in a dance instructor who can teach participants to hula. Keep in mind teenagers enjoy hanging out and talking, so you will only need to plan a few activities. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Skip paper party invitations for your 13-year-old's birthday. Teens love to text; encourage them to send creative text birthday invitations to their friends. Instruct them to use your phone number for guests to RSVP or forward any RSVP information to your phone. If you would prefer to send a physical birthday invitation, purchase beach balls with floral designs and write the time, date and place where the party will be at, as well as a number where guests can RSVP, on the ball in permanent marker.

Decorations

Decorating for a luau birthday celebration is simple. Buy 13 tiki torches to light the party area at night. Place the torches around the party area and remind guests to not venture past them. Cut grass skirts in half and tape them around the table edges. Top the tables with flower leis, tiki statutes and pineapples. Tape or hang posters of flame throwers and hula girls around the party to complete the luau atmosphere.

Coconut Games

Let the teens play with tropical food by setting up a coconut bowling lane. Set down the bowling lane boundaries with masking tape and arrange 13 fresh pineapples into a triangle formation at one end of the lane. Give each player a coconut to use as a ball. Players will roll the coconuts and try to knock down all of the pineapples. After the game, you can reuse the coconuts by playing Crack the Coconut. Just set up a table with different items like a hammer, screwdriver, icepick and a brick. One by one, time the kids as they attempt to crack their coconuts. The person who cracks the coconut first can be called "The Cracker" for the rest of the night.

Food

Your teenager's party should be filled with his favorite food while matching the luau theme. Offer guests russet and sweet potato fries, teriyaki ribs and corn on the cob. Fill wooden skewers with spicy chicken bites and pineapple. Set up a table where non-alcoholic margaritas and pina coladas are made to order. Be sure to have a few coolers filled with ice and bottles of soda and water. Give a nod to the birthday teen by setting out 13 different types of cupcakes such as carrot, chocolate, vanilla, lemon, strawberry, peanut butter, coffee, pineapple, red velvet, orange, peach, butterscotch and pecan.
