Joining a health club is a great way to keep in shape. Unfortunately, only a small number of Americans consistently work at maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you own or manage a health club, you'll need to spend some time promoting the club's services. Transfer the enthusiasm and energy you have for fitness to a dynamite promotions plan, and you'll soon have plenty of customers.

1. Decide how much money you can spend to promote your health club. Plan a yearly budget that will reflect the services you want to promote. Perhaps January, when people are resolving to start an exercise program, will take a large chunk of your budget.


2. Develop a marketing plan. E-newsletters are quickly replacing print newsletters and can keep your customers up to date on new promotions. Think about offering a free month of service for every new customer they bring. You will probably want to also utilize your website, brochures and broadcast advertising.


3. Make your health club the go-to source for local media when it comes to fitness. When a reporter needs a quote about National Exercise Week, you want your name to be the first one on his list. You can put yourself in this position by consistently sending out quality news releases.


4. Hire professionals carry out your promotions plan. Hire a writer, graphic artist and website designer on a freelance basis.


5. Think outside the box when looking for ways to promote the club. Market your services to physicians, so they'll have your name to recommend to patients. Get to know managers of the hotel near your club, and work out a deal for their customers.


6. Evaluate your marketing plan after six months, but don't rush to change your promotions. Successful marketing takes time and consistency. Remember it's more than just an ad in the newspaper. Repetition is necessary to build brand recognition.
