Make Tiki Statues

Some tiki statues are regarded as having holy properties.

Tiki statues originated in Micronesia and Melanesia and have been around for thousands of years. These decorative statues often feature an abstract face and can be carved into wood or stone. To create your own tiki statue you will need to be able to use a chainsaw or other carving device.

Instructions

1. Cut a log into the desired height using a chainsaw.

2. Find a pattern of a tiki statue and copy the design onto the wood using a dark pencil or marker. These will give you a guideline of where to make your cuts.

3. Use the chainsaw to cut out the details of the tiki statue. Most tiki statues are three-dimensional so it helps to cut out certain pieces while leaving other features intact. For example, cut out the eyes, and leave the nose as a protruding piece of wood.

4. Continue cutting until your tiki statue is complete. For an added effect you can cut intercrossing squares on the top of the stump.

5. Sand your tiki statue with an electric sander or by hand with sandpaper. You can use a wood burning tool to add dark and light areas to your statue. For a finishing touch, give the statue a few coats of dark wood varnish.
