Bright colors, exotic foods and island decorations are just a few of the things to look forward to at a Hawaiian wedding reception. Planning such an event should be great fun and attending it even better. Follow the steps below to learn throw a Hawaiian reception.

1. Plan for the event to be held outside if at all possible. This will give the reception a feel of Hawaii because most luau's and parties are held outside by the light of fire.
2. Decorate by placing inexpensive tiki torches around the area the reception will be held. Use shells, beach balls, coconuts, large silk flower arrangements, brightly colored streamers and any other decorations you find that are surfer or hula girl themed. Use as many real flowers around because the more colorful and fragrant the better.
3. Serve food and drinks familiar to Hawaii or the tropics. Mai Tai's, daiquiri's and pina colada's are the perfect alcoholic drinks for such a reception. Iced tea and punch served in a huge bowl of fruit are must haves as well. Find true Hawaiian food to serve such as Poi, chicken long rice and Lomi salmon. 4. Play games at the reception. Native Hawaii residents pride themselves on games including dancing competitions, dart throwing at a watermelon with a target painted on it and limbo.
5. Advise the guests ahead of time about the Hawaiian themed reception. Ask them to dress in Hawaiian styled clothing such as Hawaiian shirts, dresses, Hula skirts, shorts and sandals. Be sure there is someone greeting the guests with flower leis.
