Make Your Own Herb Spices With Hawaiian Sea Salt

Finishing salts are easy and very economical to make at home.

Making your own herb spices with Hawaiian sea salt is much less expensive than purchasing a premium salt blend at a specialty store. Each spice blend uses about 1/4 cup of Hawaiian sea salt. When combined with herbs and spices, the finished product yields about three salt shakers full of sea salt spice blend. Alaea, or Hawaiian clay, gives the salt its reddish-orange color, but does not alter the mellow taste or smell of the salt itself. Hawaiian sea salt may be purchased in natural foods markets, better grocery stores or online. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

Citrus Hawaiian Sea Salt Blend

1. Dry the peels of one lemon, one lime and one orange. You may also use 3 tbsp. pre-dried peels from the spice section of your local market.

2. Grind the dried peels all together in a blender or food processor. A mortar and pestle could be used, as well.

3. Combine 1/4 cup Hawaiian sea salt with 1 tbsp. citrus peel blend. Mix well.

4. Pour into a shaker with wide holes or into a shallow bowl. Serve with chicken, fish, vegetable side dishes, Hawaiian-style pizza or with some Asian dishes.

10. Pour into a shaker with large holes or into a shallow bowl. Serve with soup, burritos, tacos or other Latin-inspired foods.

Personalized Hawaiian Sea Salt Spice Blend

11. Combine 1/4 cup Hawaiian sea salt with your choice of dried herbs or spices. Use 1/4 tsp. to 1 tsp. for most ground spices. Use 1 to 2 tbsp. of flaked spices per 1/4 cup of sea salt.

12. Add 1/2 to 1 tsp. finely minced dried fruit, if desired. Try coconut, citrus or mango in spice blends you plan to serve with southeast Asian dishes. For African dishes, add finely minced peanuts to your spice blend. Experiment to find a blend you enjoy.

13. Blend well and store in a shaker with large holes or in a shallow bowl.
