Planning a wedding can be stressful, and even a small ceremony can be expensive. For couples who want to simplify the process, ease some of the stress or have a less formal affair, getting married at the local magistrate's office is a better alternative to the traditional ceremony preformed by a licensed clergyman or other religious minister. The requirements for getting married by a Justice of the Peace are also minimal.
The Marriage License
This is perhaps second in importance only to making sure you have someone to marry. Both parties will need to go to the courthouse to obtain the license at least 30 days in advance. Witnesses
Most states, but not all, require two witnesses be present on the day of the wedding ceremony. These witnesses can be anyone. They are required to stand and observe the ceremony. Check with the local magistrate's office to find out what the witness requirements are.
Identification and Fees
To finalize the marriage and obtain an official marriage certificate, the couple will need to bring a valid driver's license, the marriage license and money to pay any fees to the ceremony. Not having this documentation will delay the process and may lead to the postponement of the wedding. Fees vary depending on the Justice of the Peace.
