Throw A Hip Hop Sweet 15

In some cultures, you become an adult when you turn 15.

Fifteen is a transitional period from childhood to young adulthood. It's a time when the child starts thinking about college preparations and contemplating his future plans. Latino cultures celebrate this transition for young girls into young adulthood through quincenearas. These are lavish parties similar to proms, with elegant gowns, live music and lots of food. A party idea that could really excite your child is a hip-hop-themed sweet 15. Hip-hop has been a mainstream phenomenon in American culture since the early part of the 21st century. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a weekend date closest to your 15th birthday. Teenagers who aren't allowed to go out on a school night will more likely be able to attend your party on a weekend.

2. Book a banquet hall, youth recreation center or gymnasium for the date of your party. Discuss with the renters the flexibility of hours and negotiate a rate.

3. Design your invitations. Choose a color scheme for your invitations and match the invitation colors to the party decorations. Use pictures of your favorite hip hop artists or the image of a cassette tape for your invitation.

4. Rent a limousine or stretch Hummer. Flashing your money is a huge part of turn-of-the-century hip-hop. Have the limousine pick up you or your teen from school or home. Pick up guests on the way to the party.

5. Locate hip-hop disc jockeys. Get referrals from your friends who might know a DJ. Look in locally published magazines and weekly alternative publications for advertisements posted by DJs.

6. Request a music sample from your DJ choices. Listen to the music and pick your favorite sample. Discuss rates and party hours with the DJ before finalizing the deal. Hip-hop DJs are expected to be specialists at mixing in break beats and scratching.

7. Hire a caterer. There are no specific foods associated with hip-hop, but this crowd will likely prefer finger foods or foods they can eat quickly between dance songs. Order lots of hot dogs, french fries and desserts.

8. Decorate the banquet hall with your hip-hop theme. Spray paint poster board or construction paper with graffiti and put this on the wall. Instead of hanging a disco ball, hang CDs from the ceiling. For an old-school hip-hop feel, incorporate 1980s elements of hip-hop into your decorations such as old boom boxes or high-top sneakers with big tongues. Use them as centerpieces or wall art. You can find these elements at thrift stores.

9. Add a few contests to the lineup. Offer a $100 prize to the best b-boy and b-girl dancers. B-boying is the alternate name for breakdancing. Schedule a section in the party for amateur rappers to take the microphone and show off their freestyle rap skills. Offer a prize for the winner.
