Rank The Best Hotels In Hawaii

Some of Hawaii's best hotels line Waikiki Beach.

The best is, at best, a subjective claim especially when ranking Hawaii's hotels. The best for some may be an oceanfront resort with every conceivable amenity while another may find a rustic bungalow where the only disturbances are the whispers of nature. When ranking the best hotels in Hawaii it is important to gather research qualified sources on Hawaii's hotels, conduct an objective review of the hotels and maintain objectivity when ranking the hotels.

Instructions

1. Gather a list of the best hotels in Hawaii. Use travel guides, magazines and other reliable resources for researching hotels. AAA, Forbes Travel, Frommers, Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler have evaulated hundreds of Hawaii's hotels, providing insightful reviews of the many properties. Travel + Leisure's World's Best and Conde Nast Traveler's Gold Awards lists the best hotels in Hawaii, according to each magazine's readers. Other travel resources include the New York Times, USA Today and Budget Travel magazine.

2. Determine how you will categorize the best hotels. While a general list, or top-10 provides some information, ranking the hotels by category provides a more in-depth approach. Possible categories include geography (Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the Big Island), hotel class (luxury, business, family, boutique and resort) or whichever system best suits your needs.

3. Research each hotel personally. If you have unlimited funds and time researching in person is a way to truly experience a hotel. In person, you get a feel for the hotel's ambiance, its service and the intangibles which are difficult to glean from a website. If visiting each hotel is not feasible, review each hotel's website for information easily comparable like swimming pools, fitness centers, activities offered, restaurants, and reviews of the restaurants, and location. Use customer reviews to get an understanding of personal experiences at each property. Tripadvisor.com ranks hotels based on customer reviews and separates them into categories.

4. Compare the best hotels according to the reliable travel sources with the best hotels you found according to your research. Travel + Leisure ranks Halekulani as the No. 1 hotel in Oahu, but Tripadvisor has the hotel at No. 4. The difference is that Travel + Leisure does not consider budget when ranking hotels, while this may be one of the most important factors for guest.

5. Rank each hotel using all of the information available. Factors that might influence your rankings are cost, location, amenities and other reviews. If you are ranking the hotels for a website, blog or other publication you will want to be objective, but if this is for own use you can factor personal preferences into your rankings. From here you can create a top 10, the best hotels in Oahu, the best inland hotels or whichever type of list suits your needs.
