Put Together Luau Food For A Buffet

Enjoy the spirit of aloha with a luau buffet.

Celebrate a special occasion with an aloha-style buffet. Hawaiians celebrate special occasions with feasts or luaus with traditional and modern Polynesian-inspired dishes. The term "luau" actually means taro leaf, which is cooked and often mixed with other dishes to create many Hawaiian favorites, according to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Putting together a luau buffet takes plenty of time and preparation, especially if you plan to cook all the dishes yourself.

Instructions

1. Prepare a list of Polynesian-inspired food items with serving sizes that fit the number of your guests. Categorize food items as appetizers, main entrees, side dishes and appetizers to ensure you have a well-rounded buffet menu.

2. Prepare traditional Hawaiian dishes such as poi, a starch dish made of taro roots, poke, a dish of raw fish marinated spices and lomilomi salmon, a dish of small pieces of salmon with tomatoes, onions and other condiments. Other items are rice, pipi kaula, kalua pua'a, taro bread rolls, salads and fruits such as ripe pineapple, watermelon, papaya and mango. Kalua pua'a, or roast pork, is a staple luau dish and is prepared in an underground steam oven. Choose fruity and island-inspired beverages such as passion fruit, orange, coconut and guava drinks along with water and other soft drinks.

3. Place the dishes neatly on a buffet table and organize the table in different sections. Separate the appetizers, main dishes and desserts in sections or different tables.

4. Decorate the buffet table with flower leis and other island-inspired decorative items.
