Invitations
Take a head shot photo of the birthday person, enlarge it and cut it out. Write the invitation information on the back of the photo for an extra-special, personalized invitation. When planning a birthday for a younger person, put a cupcake into a gift box with a scroll of information attached to the top or use a stretchy bracelet to band the invitation to a horse for a cowboy or princess party.
Food
Build cupcake centerpieces out of various flavors instead of using a cake. Make small servings of comfort food, like macaroni and cheese, tomato soup, grilled cheese and peanut butter, marshmallow fluff and banana sandwiches. Freeze lemon wedges and mint leaves inside of ice to decorate the beverages served.
Decorations
Write pop culture references on paper tablecloths to remind the birthday person of happy, childhood memories and place glass soda bottles with daisies on the table. Or go with a glamorous Asian style by dressing the table with a pink table cloth and a black runner. Use black, red and pink paper lanterns as centerpieces and lay square white plates with red chopsticks at each setting. Complete the look by using pink and red napkins.
Gifts
Personalize your gift to the birthday person as much as possible. If the the birthday woman is celebrating a milestone birthday fill a bag with candy and movies that were popular when she was a teen. Pet lovers will enjoy seeing life through the eyes of animals with a special, water resistant camera that clips on to their pet's collar. A man might enjoy a mini fridge that can keep up to nine cans of soda or beer cool.
Dinner
Celebrate her birthday with a quiet, two-person dinner of shrimp Alfredo and salad. Families can reminisce over grilled steak, asparagus and herbed rice. Scoop sorbet into martini glasses to finish the night with an alternative to cake; be sure to put a candle in the birthday person's glass.
