Troubleshooting your typewriter
With more than 115 years of experience in making typewriters, Smith Corona has produced an extensive array of models since its inception. Whether you have a manual or an electric Smith Corona, a time may come when the machine does not work properly. With some logical troubleshooting, you may be able to identify and resolve the problem without having to contact Smith Corona or a professional typewriter repair company.
Instructions
1. Move to step 2 if the typewriter is manual.Ensure the electric typewriter is plugged in and turned on. If there is still no power, try another socket. Open the protective cover to continue troubleshooting an electric model.
2. Grasp the carriage lock, which is normally a lever to the right of the carriage. If it is locked, the carriage will not move. Unlock it if it is locked.
3. Identify the printwheel by looking for the ribbon that is centered on the front of the roller wheel. The print wheel is the round wheel located in front of the ribbon. Wiggle the print wheel. If it moves, it is probably not properly installed. Remove it and reinstall it by following the specific instructions in your model's user manual.
4. Insert a sheet of paper into the roller bar, and observe the ribbon running from the cassette to the front of the roller bar. Strike a key to determine if the ribbon is still producing ink. If not, change the cassette by following the instructions in your model's user manual.
5. Unlock any key hammers that are jammed together by carefully disentangling them so they fall back into their natural place. Ensure there is no debris or material blocking the keys from making connection with the cassette ribbon. If you find any, remove it carefully with tweezers or needle-nosed pliers.
6. Close the protective cover if there is one.
