LDS singles ward activities are designed to help people to get to know each other. The singles ward offers more activities than an average ward and the activities that they offer are different from that of a traditional or family ward. It is important to offer a variety of activities so that members can feel comfortable coming to at least a few of the activities. The emphasis of the activities should be to provide a comfortable atmosphere for all that attend.
Recurring LDS Singles Ward Activities
Recurring activities can offer a time for people to get together and socialize on a regular basis. This may make it easier for people to attend on a regular basis, and help shy members feel more comfortable attending. These activities allow ward members to spend time talking together and getting to know each in other in a low stress environment. Ward prayer, family home evening groups and a monthly Break the Fast dinner all create this type of environment. The family home evening groups are generally created by the bishopric, and someone is assigned to run them. The Break the Fast involves assigning specific people or groups to bring certain types of food. Other than that not much planning is needed.
Service Activities
Another type of activity that allows ward members the opportunity to get to know each other are service activities. As you spend time working together, you spend the time talking and learning about each other. The service also takes the pressure off since most of the focus is spent on the activity that you are completing. You may want to contact nearby family wards to see if there are specific individuals who could use help with painting or their yards, or contact a local recreation center to see if there is an area that you can help. Try to find activities that allow everyone to participate regardless of fitness level.
Social Activity Ideas
The social activities can be some of the most memorable LDS single ward activities. These activities are focused only on socializing and are generally planned for just once a month. These activities may include a ward dance, though you may want to invite other singles wards in your area. You could also have a game night. The game night may involve the entire ward in playing one game or feature several board games at different tables. Have everyone switch every thirty minutes to shake up the groups. Another option is to plan a luau or other theme-based party depending on the time of year. If weather permits, you could have a sports game night with beach ball, volleyball or softball.
