Kid'S Hawaiian Crafts

The islands of Hawaii are a place of great interest and mystique.

Hawaii is a fun, summery theme for a kid's birthday party or an arts and crafts project. The 50th state has its own unique language, culture and mode of dress, which can be cool for kids to learn about and make. Plan your next party with Hawaiian music, outfits and food to make a real splash.

Beaded Sunglass Chain

To brave the bright summer sun of Hawaii, decorate sunglasses with funky beaded chains. You will need store-bought plastic sunglasses, as well as beads of your choice and fishing wire or elastic jewelry string. Measure the string by wrapping it around each child's neck so that the ends hang at about chest level and cut it with about an inch of extra length on either end. Tie a knot on one end, leaving 2 to 3 inches of space below the knot and have kids fill string with beads. Tie a knot in the other end about 3 inches from the end of the string, and tie each end to one side of the sunglasses.

Lei

Print a picture of small flower and photocopy or trace it about 20 times. Cut out each flower and make a small hole in the center of each one. Attach four green pipe cleaners to each either by twisting the ends of each one around the next one to hold them in place. Leave the last twist open, and thread the flowers on to the pipe cleaner necklace, spreading them evenly around the circle. Close the circle by twisting the last pipe cleaners together once all of the flowers are on.

Grass Skirt

Cut a length of elastic string to fit comfortably around each child's waist, and tie the ends together. Measure the proper length for green ribbon pieces by holding the ribbon from the child's waist to her knees, and cut about 20 pieces of ribbon of that length, with about 2 inches of extra ribbon per piece. Tie the top of each piece of ribbon around the elastic waistband, covering the entire piece of elastic.

Umbrella Straw

Trace small circles on to a few different colors of tissue papers and cut them out. Create mini umbrellas by carefully gluing groups of three circles in different colors together. When the glue has dried, press down the circles around the edges to form an umbrella shape, and glue each umbrella to the top of a straw. Use these straws to decorate Hawaiian-themed drinks.
