Snorkel At Black Rock In Maui

You'll need these to snorkel at Black Rock

Snorkeling around Black Rock is something you must do when you visit Ka'anapali Beach, Maui. The rock is covered with coral just under the surface, and is home to a great number of fish and sea turtles. The Hawaiian legend says that the spirits of warriors left the Earth to meet their ancestors by jumping off the rock.

Instructions

1. Bring your own, or rent, snorkeling equipment. You will need a snorkel, mask, and it's a good idea to use fins. They are not mandatory, but will help if the current is strong, or if you plan on snorkeling out around the point of the rock. It is better to bring your own equipment if possible, but if you must rent, it's cheaper to rent snorkeling equipment farther down the beach, away from Black Rock. The closer you get to the rock, the more snorkeling gear tends to cost.

2. Spit in the mask, or spray the inside with an anti-fog spray to keep the mask from fogging while you are snorkeling. Make sure the mask fits snugly to your face and there are no spots where the mask allows water to leak in. Attach the snorkel to the mask and make sure you can breathe easily through the snorkel while your face is in the water.

3. Put on the fins either once you are in the water, or if it is easier, you can put them on while you are on the beach. However, if you do put the fins on while you are on the beach, you should enter the water backwards, otherwise the water will wash up under your fins and possibly cause you to fall.

4. Enter the ocean several meters out from the rock. You want to stay several meters from the rock while you enter the water because the waves may knock you into the coral or the rock edge. After you pass where the waves are breaking, you can venture closer to the rock to get a better look at the coral and the sea life living there.

5. Use your fins to paddle harder to get out toward the point of the rock and to get around the outer edge of the point. This is recommended for stronger swimmers because the waves will push you back toward the coral at the end of the point and the current is much stronger at the point of Black Rock. You can swim around the entire rock, or you can turn and go back along the same side you started on.
