Plan A Luau Wedding Reception

Luaus are supposed to be fun and casual. Make your wedding reception into a luau for family and friends to gather and enjoy as you begin a new chapter in your life as newlyweds.

Instructions

Plan a Luau Wedding Reception

1. Invitations: You can have Hawaiian-themed invitations such as a sandy beach in the background with all of the details of the wedding reception engraved into the sand. Create these yourself using Photoshop and Microsoft Word, or order them and have them customized. Include important details such as the date, time, location, and the attire guests should wear.

2. Attire: Ask your guests to wear a Hawaiian shirt in your invitations. Have leis available and place one on each guest as he enters the venue. Say "Aloha" to welcome each guest..

3. Location: You can host a luau wedding reception on a beach or a banquet hall, depending on your location and budget. If you choose to hold the wedding reception in a banquet hall, it will require more decorating than if you had it on the beach to set the tone.

4. Decorations: The theme for the decorations should be tropical. Use palm tree place cards or another Hawaiian-themed place card such as Hawaiian shirts. The resources section will tell you where you can find these. Place an orchid next to each place card, so that guests can pick one up when picking up their place card and wear it behind their ear, if they choose. The orchid can be used as your main flower theme. It can be incorporated into the centerpieces. Consider having floating candles in blue dyed water surrounded by seashells and starfish. Scatter orchids around the base of the bowl. You can hire someone to create a fruit table decorated with mini palm trees and fruits cut and placed decoratively around them. In the center, you can have a tropical drink fountain.

Use tiki torches and palm trees as other elements in the decor to create a tropical setting.

5. Food: The meal should tie in with the rest of the theme. Roasted pigs are often served at luaus, but you are not limited to that choice. See the link in the Resources section for other ideas on food items that can be served.

6. Entertainment: Hire a band or DJ to play Hawaiian luau music that guests can dance to. If it's in your budget and available in your area, consider hiring a professional Polynesian dance group to entertain your guests.

7. Favors: You can give beach-themed gel candles for favors, or seashell-shaped chocolate candies. You can find these items online.
