A Chinese star traditionally has five points, as on the nation's flag. However, a four-pointed star is often used for decorations, weapons and other objects. Making a four-pointed Chinese star from paper is a fun and simple project that almost anyone can do. This particular star is useful because it can be thrown just like a real Chinese throwing star, but without any of the dangers associated with real throwing stars. This project will take about 30 minutes to complete.
Instructions
1. Cut the origami paper square in half down the center.
2. Fold one piece of paper in half vertically with one color on the outside, then fold the other piece in half so that the other color shows on the outside. You will now have two long and skinny pieces of paper.
3. Fold the two pieces in half horizontally so that you have two small rectangles. Make a firm crease in the paper, then unfold the pieces.
4. Fold the bottom half of the paper up diagonally to meet the center crease. At this point you should have an "L" shaped piece of paper. Turn the paper around and repeat with the opposite side but in the reverse direction. You should now have a misshaped "Z." Repeat this process on the other piece of paper.
5. Fold the edge of each piece, squared inside diagonally, to make a triangle shape at the end of each piece of paper. Repeat for the other side of the paper, only this time in the opposite direction. Each side of the paper should be a mirror image of the other side. Repeat this process on the second piece of paper.
6. Fold the piece of paper in half to make a parallelogram shape. Repeat for the other piece of paper.
7. Slide the two pieces of paper together in the middle. Unfold the last fold that you made and slide the two pieces together.
8. Slide two of the smaller triangles of the first colored shape into the flaps of the second shape.
9. Flip the star over and slide the flaps from the second shape into the flaps of the first shape. Your star is now complete.
