Choose a wedding theme that reflects your personal style.
According to Wedding Channel, a wedding theme is one of the best ways to showcase a couple's personal style. With ideas ranging from nautical to outdoorsy to Asian-inspired, brides and grooms have a plethora of options to consider for their big day. Fortunately, choosing a theme can be as simple as taking a step back and deciding the style that best fits your personalities and venue.
Couple-Centric Themes
Are you a laid-back, beach-loving couple or a more serious, studious pair? Wedding Channel suggests looking at your interests and hobbies to determine if you can spin one or more into a theme. For example, foodies could create a wine and cheese-themed wedding, complete with wine bottle favors, while the couple that loves to travel might want to send passport-style invitations and feature the different cities they've visited on place cards and table decorations.
Venue-Based Themes
If you've already decided on a wedding venue, this is one of the easiest ways to choose a theme, according to event planner Nicole Lasorda of Let's Have a Ball, a Philadelphia-based party planning business. An oceanside restaurant lends itself to a seashell-inspired affair, a historic mansion could host a classic Hollywood-themed wedding and a backyard wedding would enchant guests with a floral garden party theme. If your event is taking place in a basic hotel ballroom, you have the most wiggle room when it comes to theme, Lasorda says. Transform a boring space into anything from a Mardi Gras party to a jungle-themed evening.
Location-Based Themes
The city where your event takes place can also help you determine a theme. Utilize dice, red, black and white colors and lots of glitz for a Vegas-style wedding, or showcase palm trees, pastel hues and art deco influences in Miami, Florida. Getting married in New York City? Look to the Big Apple for a formal black-and-white wedding with architectural details.
Seasonal Themes
The time of year can inspire your wedding's theme more than any other factor, according to Lasorda. Winter weddings work well with snowflakes, glittery decor and icy, pale hues such as silver and blue. A spring affair can showcase flowers, polka dots and bright pinks, yellows and purples, while nautical or beach-inspired decor and crisp blue-and-white colors suit a summer event. Fall-themed weddings typically feature warm golds, reds and browns, along with autumnal-themed favors and decorations, according to Lasorda.
Design Element Themes
According to The Knot, themes based on elements such as dots, stripes, flowers, monograms or a feur-de-lis can be simple and elegant. These ideas also work well for the couple who is not into an overly themed event. The Knot recommends tying in the theme to multiple aspects of the event, such as integrating polka dots on the place cards, invitations, favors and wedding cake.
