Ideas For Making Leis

Make a lei to celebrate graduations, weddings or birthdays.

Leis are a symbol of welcome and congratulation that appear everywhere from weddings to parties. Although flower leis can be purchased and shipped virtually anywhere, they can also be made at home using a variety of materials. Remember one traditional rule -- never remove a lei in the presence of the one who presented it, which would be considered impolite. No matter what a lei is made of, a lei is a gift of friendship.

Fresh Flower Leis

A fresh flower lei can be made from any type of flower, and orchids, plumeria and carnations are popular choices. The number of flowers in a lei depends on its size -- anywhere from 50 to 80 flowers is usually appropriate. Cut the stems off before stringing the flowers on dental floss or cotton crochet thread. To store, spritz the completed leis lightly with water, place them in a plastic bag and set the bag in the produce bin of your refrigerator, which will keep the flowers from becoming too cold.

Silk Flower Leis

Silk flowers have all of the beauty of fresh flowers but will not wilt, making these leis enjoyable for years to come. Choose brightly colored silk flowers, preferably ones that have holes in the middle once their stems have been removed. When stringing, add beads or drinking straws cut into 1-in. pieces between the flowers. Add a handful of leaves for variety, and make sure to keep the leis out of the sun for extended periods of time so the silk flowers don't fade.

Paper Flower Leis

Children can easily create paper flower leis, making this an appropriate activity for Hawaiian-themed children's parties. Have the children cut out flowers from colored construction paper, or you can prepare the flowers in advance, making sure to punch holes in the middle of each flower with a hole punch. Use a large, blunt needle for stringing and dry elbow macaroni, small beads or short pieces of straws for filler between the flowers.

Candy Leis

Leis made from candy are a tasty way to let someone know they are appreciated. Any type of candy can be used to make this type of lei, including candy bars, hard candy, chocolate coins and gum. Lay out a long strip of plastic wrap, place pieces of candy on top of the strip spaced around 1/2 in. apart, fold the plastic wrap over the candy and tie short lengths of ribbon between the pieces.
