Turn an everyday drink into something special with DIY umbrellas.
If you're planning a party or just want a summer project to do with your children, try making your own paper drink umbrellas. These easy-to-make umbrellas add something extra to a glass of party punch, or even a glass of milk at dinner. They are inexpensive to make, so your child can add them to their summer lemonade stand.
Instructions
1. Use a 2-inch circle cutter to cut circles from patterned or colored scrapbook paper. A circle cutter works by inserting a sharp point into the paper, then twisting a handle that spins the point in a circle. You can find this instrument in craft stores. Cut circles with paper sitting on a self-healing cutting mat. The sharp part of a circle cutter is protected, so children can cut the circles with your supervision.
2. Make a cut from the edge of each circle to the center point. Over lap the cut edges, turning the circle into a wide-bottomed cone. Use a glue stick to secure the edges. This is the top of the umbrella.
3. Apply hot glue to the tip of a wooden skewer and insert it from the bottom of the cone through the hole in the top so that only the tip of the skewer shows. Hold it in place until the glue dries. Repeat this procedure with the rest of the cones. Place the stick in a glass of your child's favorite beverage.
