Ideas For Unusual Party Decorations

Atmosphere and space is an important aspect of any gathering. For a party, you create atmosphere with decorations. Go beyond the basic matching centerpiece, paper plates and napkins. Here are some ways you can make your party decorations exciting and unusual. Does this Spark an idea?

Combine Different Themes

One way to make your decorations more creative and interesting is to combine different themes into one party. For example, you could have a high tea for your baby shower or an indoor pool party for your Halloween event. The juxtaposition of decorations that don't usually go together will make your decorations more interesting. By mixing and combining different pieces of decorations, you can create a look that is unique and unusual.

Think Beyond Decorations

Another way to achieve a similar effect is by first picking your party theme and colors and then searching for things that match either one--even if they aren't really decorations. For an under-the-sea theme party, you could hang shower curtains with fish on them on the walls. For an '80s theme party, you could dig out all your old '80s jewelry from your closet (or from your mom's closet) and use it to create centerpieces and table decorations.

You can also use decorations to serve multiple purposes. The fish shower curtains at your under-the-sea party could just hang on the walls, but if you have a big enough room, you could also hang them from the ceiling to create separate spaces and make your party area more interesting. For a garden theme party, you could make centerpieces out of flowerpots but use fake flowers planted in a dirt dessert made of pudding and crumbled Oreo cookies. Your guests will be surprised when you tell them to eat the centerpiece for dessert!

Make Your Own Decorations

The best way to ensure that your decorations are interesting and unusual is to make your own. If you are good at crafts and have the time, you can use your ability for all types of decorations, from paper mache wall hangings to knitted centerpieces. But you don't have to have a lot of artistic talent to make your own decorations. For a baby shower, you could make your own centerpiece simply by arranging some baby clothes in a basket. For a Halloween party, a few candles and some cotton balls, stretched out to look like spiderwebs, go a long way.
