Use colorful tissue paper to make bright leis.
You may not be able to make it to Hawaii but you can bring some of the traditions of the islands home by making your own leis. Tissue paper leis are a craft that younger kids can do. Execute this craft at a luau-themed party, during a classroom activity or for fun. With just a few items, making paper leis can be inexpensive and creative way to keep your little ones entertained.
Instructions
1. Cut out freehand circles from pieces of tissue paper. Stack or fold pieces of tissue and cut through the stack. The circles will be roughly the size of the lei's flowers.
2. Place three pieces of tissue paper on top of each other. For a different effect, layer different colors on top of each other.
3. Put an unsharpened pencil into the middle of the tissue paper layer and wrap the paper around the pencil.
4. Pull out the pencil and twist the paper in the middle where the pencil was.
5. Tape the twisted part so it doesn't come unraveled.
6. Cut a piece of yarn that is long enough so it can go around a person's head with ease. Be sure to take into account the amount of yarn it takes to knot each flower.
7. Knot a piece of yarn around the finished twisted part of the flower. Continue to form flowers and tie them to the continuous piece of yarn. To form a more full lei, tie the flowers as close to each other as possible.
8. Finish the lei by tying the two yarn ends together to form a necklace.
