Hula Hoop Games For Teens

Hoop hulas provide teens with exercise and fun.

Hula hoops made their first appearance in the United States as a toy in 1958, according to SpinningHoop.com. Many people use the hoops for play, as well as for exercise. When planning activities for a group of teens, use hula hoops to create some fun games. With some creativity and a few supplies, you can make games using these hoops that most teens will enjoy.

Hula Hoop Darts

Scatter several hula hoops on the ground and mark a point value in each hoop. Mark a standing line about 25 feet away from the furthest hoop. Place lower point value hoops closer to the standing line and higher point value hoops farther away. Make darts by wrapping fabric around a small bouncy ball and tie them off with rubber bands. Give each teen five darts to try to toss into the hoops. Keep track of each teen's score. The teen with the highest score out of five darts wins the game.

Hula Hoop Roll

Give each teen a hula hoop and have them practice rolling the hoop as far as they can. After everyone practices for about five minutes, have them line up across a line. When you say, "Roll," the teens must roll the hula hoop as far as they can with one push. The teen who has the hoop that travels the farthest distance from the line wins the game.

Hula Hoop Toss

Fill empty two-liter soda bottles with sand and scatter them on the ground. Mark a line about 20 feet from the bottles. Teens must try to toss hula hoops around the bottles. Each teen tosses 10 hula hoops. Award one point for each bottle he rings. Add up each player's points and the teen with the most points wins the game. You can also write point values on each bottle.

Hula Hoop Tricks

Have the teens practice tricks with the hula hoops. Tell them they have 10 minutes to prepare a fancy trick, such as spinning the hoop around their neck or using the hula hoop as a jump rope. After 10 minutes, have each teen perform her hula hoop trick. Name winners for the most creative, most unusual and best hula hoop trick.

Hula Hoop Fit

If you have a large group of teens, give them a couple of hula hoops and tell them to see how many teens they can fit in one hula hoop. The team who squeezes the most people inside the hoop wins the game.
