Sweet 16 birthdays are a special time in a girl's life. The transition from childhood to adulthood is in full swing by the time a girl reaches her 16th birthday. To mark this monumental time, a Sweet 16 party is often given. Themes for a Sweet 16 party can vary, and so can cake choices. Barbie Driving
The age of 16 is when most young people attempt to obtain their driver's license. Use a cake mold to create a car-shaped cake. Stick the torso of a Barbie doll in the driver's seat. By removing the doll's legs you are making it a lot easier to insert it into the cake without destroying it. Another way to combine Barbie with a driving theme is to draw a picture of keys with a Barbie logo on them. Check out the toy section, as there are toy keys that already have the Barbie emblem on them.
Barbie at the Beach
Teens love hanging out at the beach with their friends. Create a beach scene on the top of a sheet cake. Blue icing creates the water, while crumbled graham crackers indicate a sandy beach. Lay a Barbie, dressed in a bathing suit, on the beach. Create an icing blanket for her to lay on. Include Barbie beach accessories such as sunglasses and a tropical-looking drink. These accessories often come along with Barbie or can be purchased separately at a toy store. If the cake isn't large enough to accommodate a Barbie who is laying down on the beach, consider removing the legs and sticking Barbie's torso vertically into the water to indicate that she is swimming.
Barbie at the Mall
Sixteen-year-old girls and Barbie have a lot in common, including their love of fashion and shopping. Create a sheet cake and draw a picture of Barbie at the mall. Include shopping bags and the Barbie logo on the cake design. Or, if you want to feature an actual Barbie doll, consider using a miniature-sized Barbie doll and create a shopping scene on top of the cake. Dress the doll in fashionable clothing and make fondant shopping bags to surround her. Miniature-sized Barbies can be purchased in the toy section of big box stores or at toy stores.
Barbie as a Teen
Teen life is full of time with friends, dating, dances and talking on the phone. Use some of these images on a Sweet 16 birthday cake. Feature Barbie on the phone as the primary design on a sheet cake. The design can be drawn with icing directly onto the cake. A cake featuring Barbie with a group of friends or at a dance is also an appropriate cake design. You can also create a Barbie cake featuring an actual doll with a full-skirted cake bottom. This type of Barbie cake would blend well with a princess or prom queen theme.
