Sew A Hawaiian Grass Skirt

Hawai not only has great weather and beautiful beaches, it's the birth place of the fun and flirty grass skirt. For your next costume party or for halloween you can sew a grass skirt easily and economically. Your kids will love it too and you can make fun variations for boys or girls.

Instructions

1. Go to a craft store of some sort and purchase some raffia. You can make the skirt in the traditional natural color or with several different brightly colored shades.

2. Buy the raffia for about twice as long as you want the skirt. Buy some elastic about an inch wide, and a colorful material that will go around your waist about 3-4 inches wide. Have some sewer's sticky tape or clear duct tape on hand.

3. Fold the material in half over the elastic so it covers and sew along the border either with needle and thread or a sewing machine. Don't sew the elastic to the fabric. Keep the ends open.

4. Grab both ends of the elastic and place the waistband around you where you want the skirt to fall. Make marks on the fabric and cut there at each end. Leave extra.

5. Fold the raffia in half and put the ends on the tape. Tape the skirt to one side of the fabric waistband leaving room to sew directly on the raffi. Sew along making sure to hit each end of raffia. This is best with a sewing machine but can be done by hand.

6. Check for fit and sew the ends together.
