Make Birthday Invitations Yourself With A Hawaiian Theme

Take inspiration for homemade tropical birthday invitation from a Hawaiian sunset.

Greeting-card stores and party shops sell plenty of manufactured invitations, but finding the perfect cards that match both the theme and style of an event can still be a challenge. Homemade invitations let you control not only the content but the look. Create a card with visual depth for a Hawaiian birthday celebration by constructing a multilayered invitation depicting a tropical beach sunset scene.

Instructions

1. Cut the white card stock in half using the paper cutter. Fold the halves in half to create invitations that are one-fourth the size of the original card stock.

2. Thin out the craft glue with water and apply a thin coat to the top half of the invitation cover using the paint brush. Lay a piece of yellow or orange tissue paper on top of the glue and press down gently. Trim the excess tissue paper from the card using the scissors.

3. Cut out pieces of purple cellophane to cover the lower half of the invitation cover using the ruler and the scissors. Run a thin line of craft glue around the perimeter of the bottom half of each invitation. Press the purple cellophane onto the bottom half of the invitation, wiping away any excess glue.

4. Cut out strips of black, fine-grain sand paper to create a beach on the bottom quarter of the invitation cover using the ruler and scissors. Draw and cut out silhouettes of palm trees on the glossy black card stock using the pencil, X-acto knife and cutting board. Glue the sand beach and palm trees to the front of the invitation using the craft glue.

5. Draw cresting waves and a foam line on the sandpaper beach using the silver permanent marker. Write "You're Invited..." on the black sandpaper beach using the same marker. Use a lettering style for the wording so that it appears to be drawn in the sand with a stick.

6. Print out the birthday party invitation details onto the textured, tan printer paper, making sure the overall dimensions of the text will fit inside the invitation. Give the invitation details a deserted-island look by burning around the edges of the printer paper with the matches.

7. Glue the invitation details to the interior of the invitations using the craft glue. Tie a length of raffia ribbon around the fold of each invitation, creating a decorative knot in the center of the exterior fold.
