Move To Kona Hawaii

Kailua-Kona can be a great place to live.

Kailua-Kona is on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii and is a popular tourist destination due to the picturesque beaches and nearby attractions. It is also a great place to live, and relocating there can be done by following a step-by-step process.

Instructions

1. Take a trip. If you haven't yet been to Kona, take a vacation or exploratory trip to familiarize yourself with the location. This ensures that the weather, traffic and local entertainment options are suitable for you and your family.

2. Ship your big items and household goods. Keep in mind that freight to Hawaii takes longer than it does state-to-state on the mainland. Large items, including your vehicles, may take six weeks or longer to arrive at your new home in Kona. Make accommodations with a rental car agency as necessary.

3. Send your smaller items with FedEx or first-class USPS. Items that you'll need quickly after arriving that won't fit in your luggage should be shipped using expedited or priority mail. Keep in mind that USPS media mail packages will often take up to eight weeks to arrive in the islands, so plan accordingly.

4. When your vehicle arrives, register your car. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Kona will help you through this process.

5. Send your pets and plants to Kona. Pets should be boarded on the flight to Kona and will need to be inspected by the Department of Agriculture before release. Plants will also undergo agricultural inspection. Check the Hawaii Department of Agriculture website (Hawaii.gov/hdoa) for pertinent information.

6. Get to know the neighborhood. The major grocery chains in Hawaii are Foodland, Times Marketplace, and Safeway, and there are locations all across the islands.
