Ingredients For Cake Decorating

Ingredients for cake decorating are simple and easy to find.

Some ingredients you just have to keep on hand when you wish to decorate your cakes. Useful ingredients for cake decorating share the following properties: They keep well, they can transform a plain cake into a more fancy cake, and they do not cost a lot of money. The trick to cake decorating is to mix three decorating ingredients together, according to Aki's Kitchen. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Sugar for Icing

Also called confectioner's sugar, icing sugar is used as a cake decorating ingredient when it is sifted over an unfrosted cake that is plain. Icing sugar may easily be mixed with a host of other simple ingredients to make a quick frosting or icing for a cake. These other simple ingredients are water, milk or cream, shortening or butter, vanilla or chocolate or cocoa. When creating quick icing, be sure to taste it for thickness, texture and flavor, making adjustments as you see fit.

Sprinkles

Sprinkles can come in either chocolate or multi-colored or rainbow varieties. The purpose of sprinkles is to break up the monotony of either all-chocolate or all-white cakes and other desserts. Not all sprinkles are the same. Some sprinkles may actually bleed into the topping of the cake after having been left in the refrigerator for a few hours. Bleeding is defined as when the sprinkles' color tints the topping of the cake. Still, the cake's taste will be unaffected, and the cake will have a different look.

Nuts

Walnuts may be used either pulverized, whole or crushed as an ingredient in cake decorating. Before using them for cake decoration, toast them to burn off their oil so that any bitter taste is removed. Walnuts that have been crushed and toasted can simply be placed on a frosted cake.

Almonds are another good choice. Whole almonds or large pieces can be dipped in chocolate and used as decorations, or crushed or slivered almonds can be added to some cake batters.

Chocolate

Chocolate chips may be melted and then used in the making of chocolate decorations and mounds. Entire chocolate chips can simply be scattered on top of a cake as a decoration. Alternately, chocolate shavings can be positioned on a cake in a more deliberate manner.
