Ideas For Backyard Wedding Receptions

Ideas for Backyard Wedding Receptions

Many couples planning a wedding may choose a more frugal and intimate wedding over the traditional catered affair. For couples that have a large backyard or have a friend or relative who do, a backyard wedding can be a romantic and memorable event without overspending. When planning a backyard wedding, make plans for bad weather (rent a tent or make sure you have a great room or living room to retreat to) and ensure you have enough parking and restrooms for everyone in attendance.

Fresh Lilac and Lavender Wedding

Arrange long tables and chairs with white linens and purple chair bows in your backyard. Hang fresh lilac sprigs from tree branches, using hanging planters spray-painted gold. If you have a pool, float lily pads made of green foam squares cut to look like leaves (found in craft stores) with lilacs in the center. Instead of rice, hand out bubble wands for guests. As a favor, give a packet of lavender seeds to guests.

All American Wedding

For a Fourth of July, or just all-American, wedding, decorate in bright colors. Try not to be literal with a red, white and blue wedding. Groomsmen can wear chinos and bridesmaids can wear tea-length dresses in vibrant colors. Have a barbecue-themed luncheon or dinner (hire a caterer to handle the barbecuing instead of the groom). Place checkered tablecloths on the grass and have guests eat picnic style. If the wedding is in the evening, hand out sparklers.

Tropical Wedding

Place tiki torches for decorations and decorate a wedding arch with orchids and birds of paradise. Decorate long tables with centerpieces made of wild grass and tropical flowers. Float candles in the pool (if there is one). Serve fruit and garnishes in hollowed out-pineapples. Pass around passion fruit mimosas for cocktail hour.

Tea Party Brunch

Rent small intimate round tables and chairs for wedding guests. Hang paper lanterns from tree branches (found in novelty stores). Plates should be mismatched. Instead of a centerpiece, place small bouquets of garden flowers in different sized vases on each table. Serve exotic hot teas and refreshing iced teas, paired with mimosas. Have a buffet of penne with chicken, cold salads, roast turkey, omelets and french toast with berries. For dessert, have a cake made out of cupcakes.
