Plan A Super Sweet Sixteen

Hearts are a common sweet-sixteen theme.

Sweet-sixteen birthday parties are a tradition dating back over a hundred years. These parties, meant to celebrate the "coming of age" of a girl fell out of favor during the 1970s and 1980s. MTV's hit television series "My Super Sweet Sixteen" brought sweet-sixteen parties back into the limelight, spurring a new popularity with today's generation. While you may not be able to afford the extravagant and over-the-top parties featured on MTV, you too can plan your own super sweet-sixteen party. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a theme for your sweet-sixteen party. List the birthday girl's favorite animals, time periods, countries or movies and choose one to serve as a theme.

2. Decide on a locale for the party. Look into a rental hall to host the party. Hosting a party in a rented location offers additional space and a professional atmosphere. If you plan on throwing a small party or do not wish to spend the extra money, choose an appropriate area of your home for the party.

3. Work out a guest list and choose the invitations--purchase them, download or send them from a website or make your own. Plan the decorations around your theme and the birthday girl's favorite colors; be sure to include the numeral "16" prominently.

4. Devise the menu for your party. Enlist the help of friends and family members if you plan to make your party food at home. A birthday cake is a must, as are small hors d'oeuvres like finger sandwiches, shrimp cocktail and french-bread pizza squares. Consider hiring a caterer for parties featuring a meal or a large number of guests.

5. Create a playlist of favorite songs and artists to play during the party. If you wish to hire a live band to play at the party, check into local bands available for the date. Or consider other alternatives to music. Professional illusionists are a mature substitute for magicians, party games are cheap and low key and movie marathons that feature favorite picks of the birthday gal are great for sweet-sixteen sleepovers.

6. Plan small gift bags for every guest to thank them for coming to your party. Include a thank-you note with a picture of the birthday girl, candies, lip gloss, candles, soaps or other small items. Another option is to include a small disposable camera and scrapbooking supplies in the bags and hand them out before the party. Guests can fill their cameras with pictures of the party and create their own keepsake scrapbooks at home.
