Some candy mints can transform a 2-liter bottle of soda into a wildly entertaining experiment to share with your kids, family, and friends. Made popular by science teacher and author Steve Spangler, the Mentos and Coke volcano experiment has been featured on various shows including MythBusters and 9News. With just a few items, you can create the same volcano explosion right in your own backyard.
Instructions
1. Find an open area outside where you can safely perform the experiment. The volcano explosion will be messy.
2. Open the 2-liter bottle of Diet Coke and set it on the ground. Diet Coke works better than regular Coke for this experiment.
3. Roll the sheet of paper into a tube that is the same size as the opening of the Diet Coke bottle. Use a piece of tape to hold the tube together.
4. Position the tube upright and hold the playing card at the bottom end of the tube. Pour the roll of Mentos mints into the tube.
5. Place the playing card and the tube of Mentos directly on top of the opening of the Diet Coke bottle, with the card between the tube and the bottle opening.
6. Slide the card out from under the tube to release the Mentos into the Diet Coke bottle and quickly back away to watch the explosion.
